In 1956 Florida started color coding the signs for its U.S. Highways.  The concept was efficient.  Even if you could not yet read the road number you could easily know which lane to get into to follow the road.  During the 1980s our dear Federals told Florida that if they wanted color coded ease of use they would no longer pay for the signs and the state could foot the entire bill.</p>
